This building was originally a sugar factory built in 1871. The premises of the sugar factory were converted into a tobacco factory. Snuff and tobacco were produced here until 1895 when the building was again turned into a mental hospital (asylum) for male patients. The entire park was fenced off to become a recreation area for the patients. The asylum was in use until 1973. In 1986 it was converted into residential apartments and a public library.
